Managing Absenteeism and the Duty to Accommodate

January 27, 2009 - Ottawa, ON

Dan Palayew, Partner, Heenan Blaikie

Archived Presentation

As every Contact Centre Manager knows, absenteeism can be a very costly component of the contact centre operation. Many team leaders struggle to understand how best to manage the impact and work effectively with problem employees to improve. With an estimated cost to the Canadian economy of up to $10 billion a year, it’s a huge burden for contact centres that must schedule well to stay in business.  The legal requirements for the “duty to accommodate” add even more weight to this issue.

This is the focus of ORCCA’s January session which features one of the country’s foremost experts on labour and employment law.  Dan Palayew is a partner with Heenan Blaikie, one of Canada’s top national law firms, and the leader of the firm’s Ottawa Labour and Employment Group.   A former guest speaker for ORCCA, Dan regularly advises employers on employment contracts, wrongful dismissal actions, employee terminations, pay equity, human rights complaints, occupational health and safety matters, workplace safety and insurance and workplace privacy.  He has appeared before many courts and tribunals and also lectures on employment law issues for technology companies at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law.

Join us on Tuesday, January 27th when Dan explores the problems of workplace absenteeism and the employer’s rights and obligations.  Learn the legal definitions of disability, the employer’s rights to medical information and when and how to apply “the duty to accommodate” in relation to absenteeism.

The session will be interactive so come with all your questions!
